Unscrambling by hand

  • Start from the ending. Of the 6,696 common seven-letter words, 29% end in S, 16% in ED and 14% in ING. If you hold I, N and G, or E and D, set them aside and build the front from what is left.
  • Pair the consonants. Clusters that often start words, such as ST, PL, TR, CH and SH, fix the front and leave fewer places for the vowels.
  • Spread the vowels. Two vowels usually sit between consonants; try them side by side (EA, OU, IE) only after that.

A handful of letters spells more than you would expect. The seven letters of PLASTER make 209 words of three or more letters, 144 of them common, and 4 use all seven: PLASTER, STAPLER, PALTERS, PSALTER.

Where the words come from

The search covers about 52,000 English words of 3 to 8 letters, taken from SCOWL, Kevin Atkinson's spell-checker word lists, without proper names, abbreviations or Scrabble-only entries. Every one is accepted as a guess in the WordMaster games. SCOWL grades words from 10 (everyday) to 70 (rare); words at level 35 or below, plus every WordMaster answer, are listed first as common words, most frequent first.
