84 Anagram Groups in Everyday English (Counted from 1,713 Words)

Scramble STEAL and you can get SLATE or STALE. Same letters, different word: that is an anagram. Matching up all 1,713 everyday words in WordMaster's games turns up 84 anagram groups holding 173 words (10%).
Five groups of three
Five sets of letters spell three real words each.
| Letters | Words |
|---|---|
| OPST | POST, SPOT, STOP |
| AELRT | ALERT, ALTER, LATER |
| AELRY | EARLY, LAYER, RELAY |
| EERST | ESTER, STEER, TERSE |
| AELST | SLATE, STALE, STEAL |
The shorter the word, the more twins
77 of the 517 four-letter words (15%) have a twin, 92 of the 884 five-letter words (10%), and only 4 of the 312 six-letter words (1%): EXCEPT/EXPECT and MASTER/STREAM. Each extra letter makes a second real word from the same letters much less likely.
Twins learners mix up
Anagram pairs look alike on the page, so they swap in writing. These mean entirely different things and still get typed wrong:
| Pair | The difference |
|---|---|
| ANGEL / ANGLE | a heavenly being vs. the space between two lines |
| QUIET / QUITE | making little noise vs. fairly, rather |
| FORM / FROM | a shape or document vs. a preposition of origin |
| TRIAL / TRAIL | a test or court case vs. a path or track |
| EXCEPT / EXPECT | leaving out vs. thinking something will happen |
| EARTH / HEART | the planet vs. the organ (and feelings) |
ANGEL and ANGLE, QUIET and QUITE differ only in the order of their last two letters. Saying the word aloud as you write it catches most of these.
Words that read backwards
Four pairs turn into each other when reversed: EVIL/LIVE, FLOW/WOLF, LOOP/POOL and PART/TRAP. Five words read the same both ways: KAYAK, LEVEL, NOON, RADAR, REFER.
What changed in the anagram game
Counting these turned up a problem. Anagram Mode only accepted the exact answer, so if the answer was STEAL and you spelled SLATE, it was marked wrong and cost an attempt. Since October 28, spelling another real word from the same letters tells you it is a word and does not count against you.

How this was counted: the 1,713 four- to six-letter answers WordMaster's games use were grouped by their letters sorted alphabetically. These are twins within that list, not the whole dictionary; LEAST, for example, is a twin of STEAL but is not in the list.
