The Hardest 5-Letter Words to Guess (Ranked from 884 Answers)

Of the 884 five-letter answers, 203 (23%) end in E. That is a lot of weight on one square, yet most people fill the board left to right.
For this post I counted all 884 five-letter answers in the WordMaster pool, 4,420 letters, position by position. There is a companion piece on the six-letter pool, and the results are not the same.
Which position should you narrow first in a 5-letter word?
The distribution of the final square:

E, T, R and Y take 54% of the last square between them, and every other letter shares the remaining 46%.
So when you stall around guess three, work on the final square before the middle ones. As the next table shows, the leading letter in any other position covers 16% of answers at most, while E in the last square covers 23%.
What is the most common letter in each position?

E is in 462 of the 884 answers, more than half. Its position is very uneven, though: in close to half of those words the E is in the final square, and only 47 start with it.
So when you get an amber E, try it in position four or five before working through the left-hand squares.
Do six-letter tactics work on five-letter words?
The most useful number in the six-letter piece was that 48% of answers repeat a letter, so the advice there was to stop hunting for new letters and suspect a repeat.
At five letters the figure is 26%, or 230 of 884, roughly half the six-letter rate. With one square fewer, there is simply less room for a letter to appear twice.
That flips the advice. At five letters, keep testing new letters. Suspecting a repeat when you have four placed and nothing fits is six-letter reasoning.
How many 5-letter English words have no vowel?
They are GLYPH and NYMPH. That is about the same count as the three at six letters, but from a pool nearly three times the size, so as a share it is much rarer.
The bigger problem is the next tier up: 313 answers (35%) have exactly one vowel. That is why an opener with two or three vowels comes back with little about one time in three.
Why is Y tricky in five-letter words?

Y sits in 94 answers, more than X, Z, Q and J together at 56. In the six-letter pool, too, Y beat those four letters combined.
Y is also the fourth most common letter in the final square, at 74. When the ending will not come, it is the letter to try after E, T and R.

Hardly any word on that list is obscure. KAYAK, FUNNY and WHICH are words everyone knows. What makes them hard is how they are built: a repeated letter, a single vowel, or letters such as K, W and Y that early guesses rarely test.
What is the best 5-letter word to start with?
Letter frequency across all 884 answers runs E (529), A (400), R (377), T (311), O (281), I (269), L (257), S (248), N (212), C (192).
These answers use five different letters, all from that top ten:
TRIAL · TRAIN · TRAIL · TEARS · STORE · STONE · STERN · STEAL · STALE
All of them are in the answer list, so now and then the opener is the answer.
STORE and STONE also put S in first position (15%) and E in last (23%), the most common letter for each of those squares, so a green there tells you position as well as letter. There are twenty more in the starting-words piece.
Putting it together
- E, T, R and Y hold 54% of the last square. When you stall, work on the ending.
- Try an amber E in position four or five first.
- Only 26% repeat a letter, so unlike at six letters, keep testing new ones.
- 35% have a single vowel, so a vowel-heavy opener comes back thin about one time in three.

QUEUE is the word these rules help least with. E appears three times and U twice, leaving three distinct letters in five squares, and none of the openers above contains a Q.
