이런 막힘이 있습니다. 회의에서 하고 싶은 말은 분명한데, 그걸 가리키는 영어 단어가 제때 나오지 않는 겁니다.

안 떠오르는 그 단어는 보통 희귀한 단어가 아닙니다. 직장 영어의 무게를 떠받치는 마흔 개 남짓 중 하나이고, 여기 다 있습니다. 실제로 그 단어를 꺼내게 되는 상황별로 묶었습니다.

비즈니스 영어가 다른 이유

비즈니스 영어는 더 어려운 영어가 아닙니다. 평범한 단어 몇 개를 사전과 다르게 쓰는 것입니다.

Leverage는 재무 교과서에서는 부채를 뜻하는 명사지만, 전략 회의에서는 '이미 가진 걸 활용하다'라는 동사입니다. Align은 직선과 상관없어집니다. Actionable은 '법적으로 소송 가능한'이 아니라 '월요일에 이걸로 뭔가 할 수 있다'는 뜻입니다.

이 전환을 설명해주는 사람은 없습니다. 이미 익혔을 거라고 전제할 뿐이죠.

모르는 용어가 지나가면 세 가지를 하세요.

  1. 그 단어가 들어 있던 문장째로 적어두세요. 말투와 격을 가르쳐주는 건 그 문장입니다.
  2. 자기 일에 대해 직접 문장 하나를 더 쓰세요.
  3. 하루 안에 실제로 써먹으세요. 이메일이든 스탠드업이든 메신저든, 상대가 있는 곳이면 됩니다.

승부는 세 번째에서 갈립니다. 적어만 두고 한 번도 써 본 적 없는 단어는, 상대가 내 말이 끝나기를 기다리는 순간에 절대 나오지 않습니다.
