The 15 hardest

#WordWhy it is hard
1SYZYGYThree Y's, one vowel that is barely a vowel. Almost nothing you guess touches it.
2WEEKLYDouble E, plus W, K and Y — three of the eight rarest letters in one word.
3KAYAKSK twice, A twice. Six slots, four distinct letters.
4ANYWAYA twice, Y twice, and W in the middle of it.
5WHISKYNo repeats, but W, K and Y together and only one vowel.
6SQUAWKQ, W and K. The QU pair eats two slots before you learn anything.
7GALAXYDouble A, then X and Y at the end where nobody looks.
8QUOKKAQ, double K, double A. Also a word many players simply do not know.
9FOLLOWDouble L, double O, and a trailing W. Four distinct letters again.
10JOCKEYJ, K and Y — and J appears in only 7 of the 313 answers.
11ALWAYSDouble A with W and Y around it. Reads easy, plays hard.
12ZIGZAGZ twice, G twice. Once you have Z you still have to believe it repeats.
13ENZYMEDouble E hides behind Z and Y.
14YELLOWDouble L with Y and W bracketing it.
15ATTACKDouble T, double A, and a K. Common word, brutal shape.

Look down that column and the same thing keeps happening.

Nearly half of all answers repeat a letter

153 of the 313 six-letter answers — 48% — use the same letter twice or more.

That is the single most useful number here, because it runs against how people guess. Most players spend their early guesses testing six different letters, which is the right instinct at five letters and a losing one at six.

If you have four letters placed and the last two positions refuse to take anything new, stop looking for a new letter. You are probably looking at a repeat of one you already have.

A third of them use a rare letter

103 answers — 32% — contain at least one of J, Q, X, Z, K, V, W or Y. Here is how they are spread:

LetterAnswers containing it
Y36
W23
V21
K14
X12
Z9
J7
Q5

Y is worth singling out. It is in 36 answers — more than X, Z, J and Q put together — and it is the letter players leave until last, because it does not quite feel like a vowel.

At six letters, guess Y earlier than feels right.

The suffix traps

The other way a six-letter puzzle goes wrong is that you solve it and still cannot finish, because too many words fit.

EndingAnswersHow many
-TERBETTER, BUSTER, CENTER, MASTER, MATTER, SISTER, WINTER, WRITER8
-INGBUYING, COMING, LIVING, LOSING, MAKING, MOVING, SPRING, TIMING8
-ECTAFFECT, ASPECT, DETECT, EXPECT, OBJECT, SELECT6
-AINATTAIN, DOMAIN, OBTAIN, REMAIN, STRAIN5
-DERBORDER, LEADER, MURDER, TENDER, WONDER5
-GHTBOUGHT, BRIGHT, CAUGHT, TAUGHT, WEIGHT5

Land on -TER with two guesses left and you have eight candidates and no way to test them one at a time.

The move is to stop guessing whole words and spend a guess separating the front halves instead — something carrying B, C, M and S at once tells you more than picking one of the eight and hoping.

What to open with

Letter frequency across all 313 answers runs E (260), R (146), A (141), T (141), S (121), N (119), I (113), O (110), L (85), C (75).

E is not close. It appears 260 times in 1,878 letters, nearly double the next one.

The best openers are the answers that cover the most of that list with six distinct letters:

OpenerCovers
REASONR, E, A, S, O, N — six of the top eight letters
NATUREN, A, T, U, R, E
MASTERM, A, S, T, E, R
STREAMSame letters as MASTER, different order — useful as a second opener
SENIORS, E, N, I, O, R — heaviest on vowels

All five are themselves answers in the pool, so a good opener can also just win.

Putting it together

Open with REASON or SENIOR. If that comes back thin, the answer is probably in the hard third — and the hard third is where the repeats and the rare letters live.

From there, two rules do most of the work:

  • When new letters stop landing, test a repeat before testing another new letter.
  • Guess Y earlier than feels natural. It is in 36 answers.

Then go and lose to SYZYGY anyway. Somebody has to.

Hard Mode plays the six-letter pool these numbers come from. Ten more tricks covers the five-letter version.
